Scientists call it one of "the most comprehensive climate science reports" ever.
Key Report Confirms Human Role in Climate Change
By Sami Makelainen, TechCast Research Editor, Social Trends
As climate change appears to accelerate and its impacts become more apparent, scientists in the United States are waiting for the official release of a key report. The "blunt" report, which states human activity is “extremely likely” the cause of most warming in recent decades, has been signed off by the National Academy of Sciences. (New York Times, Aug 7, 2017)
Record-setting climate-related events now occur increasingly often. Witness, for example, the ongoing largest-ever wildfires in Greenland and the Lucifer heatwave, which is causing all-time high temperatures in southern and western Europe. (New Scientist, Aug 8, 2017; New York Times, Aug 6, 2017) TechCast experts expect a dangerous tipping point on climate change is more likely to happen than not, with tremendous negative impacts ranging from food shortages to rising sea levels displacing millions.
While a rapid shift to alternative, low-emissions energy generation might stave off the absolute worst-case scenarios, adaptation strategies will be required. Emerging technologies such as controlling aspects of the weather—precipitation in particular—may preserve more predictable growing conditions even in the face of shifting climate.
With mounting pressures, both from growing populations and from yields expected to slip as climates warm, alternative food sources are also likely to provide another significant adaptation strategy.
